Jacob TV & Chatham Saxophone Quartet

The Irish Composers’ Collective kick off the new year with a high-energy concert of new music featuring the acclaimed Chatham Saxophone Quartet and guest artist, dutch ‘avant pop’ composer Jacob TV. Chatham Saxophone Quartet will perform six new works written by members of the Irish Composers’ Collective, as well as Jacob TV’s Grab It! and Jesus is Coming followed by a Q&A with the composer.

Over the past eight months, members of the Irish Composers’ Collective have been writing new works for saxophone quartet under the mentorship of Jacob TV, and through collaborative workshops throughout 2019 with Chatham Saxophone Quartet. The result is an eclectic programme of new music featuring 8-bit game music, Japanese TV Adverts, political doublespeak, an angry street evangelist, sound bytes from the streets of New York and of course four saxophones: soprano, alto, tenor and baritone.

Described as the ‘Andy Warhol of new music’ JacobTV’s so called ‘boombox’ repertoire, works for live instruments with a grooving sound track based on speech melody, has found audiences all over the world. In 2007 a three-day JacobTV festival took place at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. His largest work, a never-ending reality opera THE NEWS is ongoing and constantly being updated. Various editions have been performed in Chicago, Rome, Amsterdam, Hamburg, New York. According to the Wall Street Journal his work ‘makes many a hip-hop artist look sedate’.

Runaway winners of Music Network’s Young Musicwide Award in 2012, the superlative Chatham Saxophone Quartet (CSQ) has repeatedly won plaudits for its bravura performances and versatility. With an eclectic repertoire spanning contemporary, classical and jazz genres, this unique ensemble pushes the boundaries of what we know the saxophone quartet to be.

Since its foundation in 2008, the Chatham Saxophone Quartet (named after the street where the ensemble first formed) has appeared at the Boyle Arts Festival, Ten Days in Dublin festival, Galway Music Residency, the National Concert Hall, and additionally regularly feature in Dublin’s monthly Kaleidoscope Night. In 2012 the quartet performed throughout Ireland as part of their national tour.More recently the CSQ collaborated with the Irish Chamber Choir, playing a programme of spiritual music featuring repertoire by Arvo Pärt, Gesualdo and Kancheli.

The quartet’s members all actively compose and arrange new works for the group. In addition to performing contemporary pieces for saxophones and electronics, the CSQ have also worked closely with both the Vanbrugh Quartet and ConTempo String Quartet in transcribing string repertoire for wind instruments. In 2015, the CSQ launched their debut album “New Irish Music” (under Lyric FM label), featuring new works by Brian Byrne, Ian Wilson, Brian Irvine, Jonathan Nangle and Ken Edge.

Malachy will perform five new works written by ICC composers Sebastian Adams, Daniel Reid, Richard Hughes, Kevin Free, and Paul Scully, as well as a Judith Ring's Fusion for Double Bass and electronics.

Malachy Robinson is a dedicated chamber musician, as passionate about Early Music as he is about New Music. He is a founder of the Gregory Walkers, a group performing “Early Music from Ireland and beyond” in which he plays the viola da gamba, and is director of the Robinson Panoramic Quartet, a revelatory alternative to the standard string quartet. Principal double-bass with the Irish Chamber Orchestra since 1995, he is also a founder member of the cutting-edge Crash Ensemble as well as appearing with period-instrument orchestras such as The Sixteen, the English Concert, the OAE and the Academy of Ancient Music. He was a founder member of the Irish Baroque Orchestra and of the quintet Lunfardia led by Argentinean guitarist Ariel Hernandez. Solo double-bass performances have included many Irish premieres, including Serbian composer Zoran Eric’s concerto “Off” which he performed eight times on tour with the ICO. He has worked closely with many Irish composers including Kevin O’Connell, Donnacha Dennehy, Ian Wilson and Raymond Deane. His double-bass playing has been described by the Irish Times as “rich in rhetoric” with “rhythmic life” and “unassuming virtuosity” and by the Irish Examiner as “remarkable virtuosity” employing a “variety of timbres”. The Classical Review magazine (reviewing a recording by the EQ Ensemble) praised his “adroitly lowering, often exquisitely bathetic double bass”!

We are delighted to present a concert of new music for guitar duo. Taking place in the beautiful and resonant surroundings of the exhibition room in the Irish Georgian Society’s City Assembly House on South William Street, this concert will feature six new works by ICC members Chris McAteer, Sinead Finnegan, Kilian O'Kelly, Daniel Reid and Susan Geaney.

Freddy Walsh is a guitarist currently based in Dublin. He holds a Master’s degree in Performance & Musicology from NUI Maynooth, and a BA in Music from Waterford I.T. In 2014, he won first place in the senior classical guitar competition in the Feis Ceoil, becoming the first WIT student to do so. He has performed throughout Ireland in such venues as the Unitarian Church, St Anne’s Church, Castalia Hall, Garter Lane, and Crescent Arts Centre Belfast. He studied under the tuition of classical guitarist Michael O’Toole and jazz guitarist Tommy Halferty.

James McDonald is a classical guitarist who graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology with a BA in Music. Under the tutelage of Michael O’Toole he was the second Waterford I.T student to be awarded first place in the Féis Ceoil Senior Classical Guitar Competition (imitation is the highest form of flattery), and was also awarded the Bridget Doolan award, both in 2017. Solo and chamber performance venues include the National Concert Hall, St Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick, and
Black Abbey Church in Kilkenny.

Freddy and James have noted a dearth of guitar duo music from Ireland, and, as well as performing works by international composers, have sought exciting new works by Irish composers for two guitars. The duo recently performed in Belfast as part of Moving on Music and Contemporary Music Centre’s “Emerging Artist Programme.” They feel that the amount of guitars onstage at the moment is adequate, but not yet ideal, and as such welcome submissions from interested composers.
